Western Union Expands Outbound Remittance Services with Launch of Enhanced Mobile App in Mexico

Press Release By Reggie Adams Published OnJuly 11, 2024

Mexico City, July 9, 2024 – Western Union today announced the availability of an enhanced version of its mobile app in Mexico, offering a convenient, fast, and reliable option for sending remittances to more than 200 countries and territories, including Argentina, China, Colombia, the U.S., and Spain.

“Western Union is focused on constantly improving our customer experience, providing greater choice, increased speed and convenience when they send money to friends and family,” said Claudia Reyes Armebianchi, Vice President, Western Union Mexico and Central America. “Using both digital and physical means, Western Union provides our customers a unique experience by offering the ability to send money, no matter where they are located, transforming their cross-border remittance experience, while offering speed, convenience and reliability.”

Customers can send money through the app using Mastercard and Visa cards. Recipients can collect remittances as cash pickup at local agent locations, through mobile wallets where this service is available or directly to bank accounts. Also, first-time users can send money abroad with a $0 transfer fee in their first online transaction.

To send money through the application, customers must follow the next steps:

  1. Download the app here and follow the necessary steps to register. After initial registration, customers automatically log in with Touch ID or their credentials.
  2. Start to transfer money with the app by entering the destination country and the amount to be sent.
  3. Choose the payout method, such as direct to a bank account, for cash pickup or to a mobile wallet, based on receiver’s country. Users will be able to pay for their money transfer via credit/debit card such as Visa or Mastercard.
  4. Customers will receive a tracking number (MTCN), which they will need to share with their recipient to track the funds.

In Mexico, the first quarter of 2024 had a total of 459 million dollars in remittances sent by Mexicans abroad, an amount greater than the 338 million dollars reported in the same period in 2023 and which shows an annual increase of 35.8%[1]. These results highlight the importance of having innovative, fast, and reliable channels that Mexicans can count on for their money transfer needs.
